Black mother slain by Seattle police battled mental health decline

Charleena Lyles called the police about a burglary in her home, and while the two officers were there investigating, they say Lyles "confronted" them with a knife before she was shot and killed.

Lyles' death also comes less than two days after a St. Paul, Minnesota, jury acquitted St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez for the July killing of Philando Castile.

Family members told the paper that the woman was several months pregnant and had been struggling with mental-health issues for about a year, according to The Seattle Times.

There were children at the scene while the shooting occurred, " but they were not injured", the department said.

On Monday, Seattle officials released dash cam audio of a Sunday morning police shooting that left Charleena Lyles, a pregnant mother of three, dead.

Amazon buying Whole Foods in $13.7 billion deal; grocery stocks tumble
Completion of Amazon's purchase is subject to approval by Whole Foods' shareholders, regulatory OKs and other closing conditions. For traditional grocers, like Kroger , this purchase makes the market even more price-competitive, she added.

"Why couldn't they have Tased her?" she asked.

Despite Lyles' mental-health battles, her brother, Domico Jones, said his sister was "not a person you would fear or feel intimidated by".

- Because of the previous incident, police considered her an "officer hazard", which is why two officers were dispatched to take her burglary report. They calmly discuss an X-Box video game console being taken and roughly 15 seconds later, officers could be heard saying "Get back!" After a couple of minutes, the officers are heard yelling, "Get back".

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray in a statement Sunday called the shooting a tragedy.

According to King County jail records, Lyles was arrested and charged with obstruction of a public officer and harassment of a law enforcement officer on June 5. What's not yet clear is whether the officers had the time or physical space to use de-escalation techniques, and whether the presence of children influenced the decision to use deadly force.

NASA reveals 10 new potentially Earth-like planets
Before Kepler, astronomers only knew of giant Jupiter-sized exoplanets, some in astonishingly tight orbits around their stars. Nasa said several of the 10 new potentially habitable planets circle stars similar in size to our sun.

"Both officers had to fire their service weapons, striking the individual", Seattle Police Detective Mark Jamieson said.

A neighbor, 42-year-old Lhora Murray, told The Stranger that police "handed her two of the victim's children - a 10-year-old and the toddler with down syndrome". She says an Xbox was stolen and then, the situation escalates quickly. Police were responding to a burglary call and claimed the woman brandished a knife before officers shot and killed her.

The shooting is being reviewed by the Seattle Police Department's Force Investigation Team, and its Office of Professional Accountability.

A court-ordered federal monitor issued a report in April asserting that the department had made a positive turnaround and that use of force by officers was down, reported the Times.
