North Korea fired several short-range missiles into the sea off its east coast early on Saturday, South Korea and the US military said, as the two allies conducted annual joint military drills that the North denounces as preparation for war, APA reports quoting Reuters. The launches occurred in the midst of the US and South Korea's annual military exercises. It later amended its statement to say the missiles flew "approximately 250 kilometers in a northeastern direction".
The Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercises, which mainly involve computer simulations rather than battlefield maneuvers or fly-overs with bombers, are now taking place in South Korea.
Kim says North Korea's large-sized artillery rockets blur the boundaries between artillery systems and ballistic missiles because they create their own thrust and are guided during delivery. Two intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July resulted in a new round of tougher global sanctions.
He said the launches sent a signal that Pyongyang is still not prepared to back away from its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
