The 13-year veteran of the Hardee County Sheriff's Office was from Zolfo Springs.

The incident took place at State Road 66 and Old Crewsville Road in Hardee County.

Sgt. Joseph Ossman, who had worked in the Florida Department of Corrections for 21 years, was on his way to work, according to a statement from Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R).

Sergeant Joe Ossman was reporting to work at the Hardee Correctional Institute, the Florida Department of Corrections said. Further details about what happened have not been released.
