Egyptian police kill 10 suspected militants in raids near Cairo

ISIL fighters ambushed a police convoy in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Monday, killing 18 officers and wounding seven others in one of the deadliest attacks this year in the restive region.

The suspected militants first opened fire at security force members, prompting them to respond, the ministry added on its official Facebook page.

At least nine terrorists were killed today by the Egyptian security forces in a densely populated central Cairo neighbourhood, a security official said.

While the group is based in North Sinai province, it has also carried out attacks elsewhere including in the capital, and has claimed attacks that have killed more than 100 Coptic Christians since December.

They said initial enquiries indicate the militants were planning to attack state institutions, the police, the military and the judiciary, and to blow up key installations. One of the militants, they said, died when an explosive device he meant to use against the policemen went off prematurely, killing him instantly.

Since 2013 following the overthrow of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's army and security forces have increasingly engaged in violent confrontations in North Sinai with Islamist insurgents.
