Donald Trump welcomes authoritarian Malaysian PM Najb Razak to White House despite major corruption probe

The White House has denied any arrangements with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to stay at the Trump International Hotel during his visit to the United States to meet with US President Donald Trump.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said later Tuesday that she was "not aware" of the corruption accusation coming up during Trump's conversations with Najib.

On Twitter, Harvard Law professor Larry Tribe said there was "no doubt" that Trump accepting payments from the Malaysian government through his hotel was unconstitutional.

But it has been at the center of investigations in the U.S. and several countries amid allegations of a global embezzlement and money-laundering scheme.

At their meeting, Trump and Najib instead focused on areas of agreement, such as economic development and counterterrorism measures when they spoke during a public appearance in the Cabinet room of the White House.

Mr. Trump also praised Malaysia as a significant investor in US securities, saying that American markets have been hitting records highs "on nearly a weekly basis" during his presidency.

United States top court temporarily upholds Trump's refugee ban
By that point, the original 90-day travel ban will have lapsed and the 120-day refugee ban will have just a few weeks to run. Lower courts had blocked the ban, saying Trump overstepped his authority and unconstitutionally targeted Muslims.

Razak has met Trump before, and boasts of a warm relationship with the billionaire former businessman.

Trump also pointed out that Malaysia is a "massive investor in the United States in terms of stocks and bonds".

Najib had once enjoyed close ties with Trump's predecessor Barack Obama, playing golf with the Democratic president in Hawaii in 2014. The White House said it would not comment on the US Department of Justice investigation.

'It's unfortunate but consistent with Trump's policy of downplaying democracy and human rights as an aspect of US policy, ' says Joshua Kurlantzick, senior fellow for Southeast Asia at the Council for Foreign Relations.
