Kaspersky Lab co-founder accepts invitation to testify to US Congress

Kremlin condemns US ban on Kaspersky Labs software

Russia calls US ban on Kaspersky products 'regrettable' (Lead)

The appearance before Congress would be Kaspersky's most high-profile attempt to address long-standing accusations that his firm may be conducting espionage on behalf of the Kremlin.

The intelligence community - particularly the Federal Bureau of Investigation - has been investigating ties between Kaspersky Lab and the Russian government, but has yet to provide the public with any hard evidence of collusion or influence.

"The risk that the Russian government, whether acting on its own or in collaboration with Kaspersky, could capitalize on access provided by Kaspersky products to compromise federal information and information systems directly implicates US national security", it added.

Peskov was speaking after the Trump administration on Wednesday told US government agencies to remove Kaspersky Lab products from their networks, saying it was concerned the Moscow-based cyber security firm was vulnerable to Kremlin influence and that using its anti-virus software could jeopardize national security.

Kaspersky cited "geopolitical turbulence" as the likely reason why U.S. Homeland Security banned his company's products from federal IT systems. The company responded by claiming that it doesn't "have inappropriate ties with any government, which is why no credible evidence has been presented publicly by anyone or any organization to back up the false allegations made against the company".

No consensus on government-paid health care
Meanwhile, Republicans have begun crafting their own answer to the high price of health insurance. The bill calls for elimination of premiums for private health insurance, deductibles and co-pays.

Nicholas Weaver, a computer security researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, called the US government decision "prudent"; he had argued for such a step in July.

Kaspersky Labs denied any ties and said it's disappointed with the DHS decision.

"The department is concerned about the ties between certain Kaspersky officials and Russian intelligence and other government agencies", the directive said.

While he described the revenue his firm earns from the USA government as "close to zero", the wider United States market accounts for about a quarter of Kaspersky's sales.

Best Buy pulled Kaspersky software products from its shelves in the last several weeks.

USA intelligence agencies have concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a multipronged digital influence operation previous year in an attempt to help Donald Trump win the White House, a charge Moscow denies.

But two months ago, the news website Bloomberg reported it had seen emails between chief executive Eugene Kaspersky and senior Kaspersky staff, outlining a secret cyber-security project apparently requested by the Russian intelligence service FSB.
