As the country prepares to vote on the issue, Wallabies star Israel Folau thrust himself into the centre of a huge controversy on Wednesday evening as he announced that he is opposed to same-sex marriage on his official Twitter account.

Government officials say the mail-in poll will cost about 97 million USA dollars.

Bree added that she hoped the man "shared the same values" and implored him to vote "yes" on the survey.

Meanwhile, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) - the government department in charge of handling the survey - said people shining torches through envelopes was not a security issue.

Even if the same-sex couples can marry, it will not be marriage equality.

I sense there is a feeling out there, that people are apprehensive of commenting on the same-sex marriage debate, as they do not want to lose friends, be labelled as homophobic, or be publicly condemned.
