The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Tuesday that Ophelia was located about 780 miles (1,260 kilometers) west-southwest of the Azores.
The storm formed well outside what meteorologists refer as the "main development region", where most hurricanes form in the Atlantic.
Perhaps the most impressive statistic is that if Ophelia strengthens to a hurricane, which it is forecast to do, it will be the tenth consecutive hurricane.
