Amazon Launches New Wind and Solar Projects Across the US

The new West Texas wind farm is the eighteenth for Amazon, and the online retail giant has 35 more wind operations in the works. "It's become a very significant part of the market, and we see it continuing".

In related news, Danish wind giant Vestas yesterday confirmed details of a new project to deliver the world's first utility-scale wind, solar, and battery energy storage project.

Overall, the electricity generated from these projects is capable of powering at least 330,000 households annually.

Amazon said the wind farm was built, owned and operated by Lincoln Clean Energy, which develops wind and solar projects in the U.S. Amazon has entered into a long-term agreement to purchase 90 percent of the facility's output.

Amazon estimates that their clean energy projects generate hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars to the communities that house them.

"Investing in renewable energy is a win-win-win-win - it's right for our customers, our communities, our business, and our planet", Kara Hurst, Amazon's worldwide director of sustainability, said in a statement Thursday. The project was developed by Lincoln Clean Energy, which is an I Squared Capital portfolio company.

Amazon, LCE, and the local community celebrated the launch with an onsite BBQ event.

Besides its investment in renewable energy, Amazon's commitment to sustainability comprises of innovations such as Frustration-Free Packaging programs, which eliminated over 55,000 tons of packaging in 2016, the District Energy system at its headquarters in Seattle that heats more than 3 million square feet of office space by using recycled heat obtained from a neighboring non-Amazon data center, and more.
