However, on May 30th the ship's engine was flooded during a storm, meaning the mariners could no longer use it. Their mast was damaged.

Sailors from the Ashland approach a sailboat with two Honolulu women and their dogs aboard as they are rescued after being lost at sea for several months. They were found thousands of miles off course after a series of troubles.

Then, a Tiawaneese fishing vessel spotted them and called the Coast Guard. "They saved our lives", said Appel, according to a statement from the Navy. "The pride and smiles we had when we saw [the Navy] on the horizon was pure relief", Appel said.

In June, they began making daily distress calls, but had no luck getting the attention of ships for 98 days straight, according to The Guardian.

"When she got on the telephone, she was very enthusiastic and she just sounded great", Appel said. "There is a true humility to wondering if today is your last day, if tonight is your last night". Appel's daughter Jennifer was there, waiving in the rescuers.

"You can't get any help at all because you're in the middle of nowhere", Fuiava said in a call with the media. "I was ready to cry, I was so happy". "I just had no idea it would be more than five months before she would reach shore so I was anxious", Joyce Appel said.

"She said, "Mom?', and I said, 'Jennifer!?', because I hadn't heard from her in, like, five months", she said".

Appel and Fuiava had left Honolulu on May 3 aboard Appel's 50-foot vessel the Sea Nymph for what was supposed to be an 18-day trip to Tahiti.

Talking about the experience at sea, she added: "It was very depressing and it was very hopeless but it's the only thing you can do, so you do what you can with what you have". "And she said, 'yes mom", and that was really exciting". "I waited and waited and waited to see when I would hear from her". She said she was relieved to finally talk to her daughter briefly after they were safe. "Three would get on one side and two would get on the other side, and they would make waves and try to knock down the boat".

Appel told reporters on Friday that they were beginning to believe they were completely out of luck when they saw the U.S. Navy ship chugging toward them.

Video footage released by the US Navy shows one of the joyous sailors blowing kisses at the rescue ship, with two brown dogs wearing lifejackets barking on the sailboat deck.

Appel and Fuiava were able to survive the five months of being stranded, thanks to water purifiers and a year's worth of food they packed before sailing ― mostly dry goods like oatmeal, pasta and rice.
