The two then shared a meal of American beef, passing up the region's famous Kobe beef. The president said that "no dictator" should underestimate his country's resolve as he addressed a gathering of American and Japanese troops on the first leg of his Asia tour.
Asked whether he was anxious that North Korea's Kim Jong Un would use the president's visit to the region to demonstrate another missile test, Trump said: "We'll soon find out. And there's been 25 years of total weakness, and so we're taking a very much different approach", he said.
Japan is the first stop on the president's Asian tour, which will take him to South Korea, China, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
